Why have things become so confusing?

It's just the stage you are at in becoming less confused. Most people are confused but don't see it. To become unified you have to see that you are many. I think you would find some enlightenment in The Psychology of Man's Possible Evolution by P D Ouspensky, much of which is about being many "I"'s and what is the real "I".
