Why did more women enter into the art of printmaking at the turn of the 20th century than any other art?

I'm writing a paper about the advent of feminism and its effects on women printmakers, and one of my sources calls the art of printmaking "more democratic" than other art forms, with no explanation as to why. Does anyone know why this would be?
