Are free driver download sites trustworthy?

Lost my multimedia controller drivers when I reinstalled XP. Wizard cannot find any on the Net, my PC manufacturer has gone bust and I never had details in writing. I have cause to be wary of third party sites which promise to do wonderful things to my PC.....
